Winter Has Arrived in the Ottawa Valley

We had a major snowstorm these past two days here in Renfrew County – almost 30cm of snow. While it looks pretty, it sure is a lot of work getting it all shoveled away from the driveway and walkways around the house.

We live close to the Bonnechere River in North Algona, Wilberforce Township. While most of the lakes and rivers in this area are now frozen over, the Bonnechere stays open where Wilber Lake flows into it. This means that we have some resident ducks and geese that decide to spend the winter here rather than heading south. We also have lots of beavers – they do incredible damage to the shoreline but are interesting creatures to watch and observe. This picture shows the remains of some busy beaver’s ‘tooth-work!’
